A movie is coming out shortly, called "The Expendables". Schwarzenegger, Willis, Stallone, lot of names involved, and a couple of websites are panning it already as being a showcase for over-the-hill action stars. I dunno, Clint Eastwood is in his late 70's, early 80's? You don't want to see him in a movie? Sean Connery retired, but I'd love to see him return to the big screen. Michael Caine? Harrison Ford, anyone? Seriously, what is this bizarre fascination with youth? Age doesn't necessarily mean inability. I'm pushing 49 and I outwork my coworkers half my age on a daily basis, in a profession that requires a great deal of physical exertion. Granted, climbing stairs is a rough go, since I have a knee that requires replacement, but I just gut it out and do it. That might be the key to it all: having the will to do what needs to be done. I won't toss out a blanket condemnation of this generation, but let's face it, on the whole they are softer than what came before. Tom Brokaw called those who endured WWII "The Greatest Generation", and rightly so. It's kinda sad and scary to think that my generation, the "Baby Boomers", are tougher than what's come since. It's probably our fault, since I and my contemporaries grew up in an age of hippies, free love, and peace. Don't shelve us old folks just yet; we have a lot going on. I'm gonna go see that movie, munch outrageously-priced popcorn, and enjoy watching those "over-the-hill" action stars.
