At this point it seems certain Samuel Alito will be confirmed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Why that has sparked such a firestorm of protest, I don't know. To my knowledge, the sole duty of the Justices is to interpret the laws based upon the Constitution. Judge Alito gets high marks from his peers in every aspect of judicial law, temperament, and restraint. According to the American Bar Association, he is "well qualified", which is the highest recommendation they bestow. So...why the hoopla?
Judge Alito is a conservative. Ah, there's the rub. Despite testimony from many of his peers, Republican and Democrat, that he is a sound jurist who doesn't let personal opinions sway his legal decisions, that isn't enough for some. That is more than unfortunate, it's ridiculous. The Constituition is the guideline, not partisan politics. Supreme Court nominees have become a political football. What saddens me most is that from a magnificent document, our Constitution, so many idiotic political agendas have been allowed to overshadow the simple facts. The federal government's roles are few and defined, the states' wide and varied( per the Constitution), yet now the opposite is true. How did it first come about? Through the Supreme Court, of course. How can we permit this to stand? We cannot. To do so would dishonor the names and sacrifices of our founding fathers
